Steps to becoming a School Cycling Instructor

Welcome on this journey to implement bicycling as a Physical Education Unit in every school in America. It can be done! It will be done with professionals like yourself. You will be in the forefront of establishing bicycling as an annually taught program in schools! Then as the student continues in school they can build on this foundation with more YES bicycling skill building curricula. You, as an SCI, can also advance from Levels 4 all the way to Level 1 continuing to bring cycling knowledge/skills to the teachers and students in middle and high school. We appreciate your commitment and look forward to you becoming a YES-School Cycling Instructor (SCI) Level 4.

Who can apply for a School Cycling Instructor Level 4 Certification:

  • Bicycle Experts: LAB-LCI; NICA-Coaches; USAC-Coaches 
  • Credentialed School Teachers
  • Parks & Recreation Professionals - Youth Instructors
  • Firefighters
  • Law Enforcement
  • Other (please provide resume for approval)

The YES-SCI Training Level 4 online self-pacing 4-5 hours consist of:

  • SCI Application
  • YES Curricula: "Introducing Schools to Cycling" & "YES-KIDS Bike"
  • YES-SCI Training Section 1 and Competency Quiz Section 1
  • YES-SCI Training Section 2 and Competency Quiz Section 2
  • YES-SCI Training Section 3 and Competency Quiz Section 3
  • YES-SCI Certificate of Certification

Costs for YES-SCI Training Level 4 online is $95.00:

There are refunds or discount for some individuals or groups, if you are:

  • Credential Teachers - Fee is $95.00 to be refunded $15 with proof of current national credentialed teachers license.
  • Law Enforcers -  Fee is $95.00 to be refunded $15 with proof of live-scan fingerprinting results.
  • USA BMX Coaches - Fee is $95 as a licensed USA Cycling Coach to be refunded $15 with proof of current NCSI results.
  • USA Cycling Coaches - Fee is $95.00 to be refunded $15 with proof of current NCSI results.

Your SCI Level 4 Certificate and refunds will be issued after completing the following steps:

  1. Completed and Signed YES-SCI Certificate Application along with the Risk/Media waiver form,
  2. Payment of the SCI Level 4 Training Fee
  3. Receiving NCSI certificate of cleared criminal background check (Credentialed Teachers and Law Enforcers-see above refund)
  4. Download curricula: "YES-KIDS Bike" and "Introducing Schoolss to Cycling"
  5. Completed the YES-SCI Training Level 4 & passed the competency quizzes
  6. Introductory first year membership with SHAPE America (Society of Health And Physical Educators)
  7. Uploaded to YES proof of First Aid, CPR with AED Certification,
  8. Uploaded to YES confirmation of passing Tuberculosis Test, and

All SCI are required to:

  • keep current a background check.
  • have a current First Aid, CPR and AED courses certification.
  • have a current Tuberculosis test results.
  • keep up-to-date their annual SCI Certification
  • pay an annual SCI fee

USA Cycling Inc.

Only SCI Level 3, 2, 1 are required to keep current with one or more of the following:

  • League of American Bicyclist - League Cycling Instructor,
  • National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) - Coach or Assistant Coach,
  • USA BMX - Coach Level 1-3,
  • USA Cycling - Coach Level 1-3 and/or
  • Teacher's Credentials

SCI Level 3, 2, 1 are required to attend every 3 years a FREE SCI Continuing Education Webinar to refresh their cycling methodology.

SCI Level 3, 2, 1 are responsible to earn 9 Credited Education Units (CEU) every 3 years. Advancing to the next SCI level is 7 CEU.

SCI Level 3, 2, 1 are required to keep their YES-SCI web page current.

YES will only certify US legal residents or US citizens as coaches. Non-US citizens living abroad are not eligible for YES certification.

At YES discretion, any individual who has admitted to, pleaded no contest in regard to, been convicted of or served a sentence for a violation of the USADA, WADA, or UCI anti-doping code, or child predator will be denied a SCI Certificate and will instantly be removed from the SCI web page.

School Cycling Instructor Advancement Information

SCI Level 4 Training

To become a School Cycling Instructor (SCI) everyone starts with the online YES-SCI Training Level 4. The quiz covers information provided in the online training and from "Introducing Physical Education Teachers to Cycling" as well as from "YES-KIDS Bike" curricula. Once finished and submitted the quiz for each section the score will immediately be posted and your results will be displayed. A score of 80% or better is passing. Once you pass the quizzes and all required documents are received by YES you will receive the SCI Level 4 Certification with your lifetime SCI #.

Congratulations you are a SCI! As soon as possible, your personal website will be posted with the information supplied in the SCI Application Form and an email will be sent requesting a personal photograph and more information. Please notify YES if a schools sets-up a School Cycling Club and that information will be posted to the School Cycling Club web page.

SCI Level 3 Advancement

The SCI Level 3 Clinic covers information provided in YES-BLAST Vol. 1 Curriculum to provide cycling education to middle/intermediate schools. Once finish and submitted, the SCI Level 3 Competency Quiz, it will be scored immediately and your SCI Level change will be displayed on your webpage. To check the status of our certification, please email info@yesports.org, include your School Cycling Instructor number. Once you pass the quiz and all requirements are up to date, YES will send the SCI Level 3 Certificate.

SCI Level 2 Advancement

A SCI looking to achieve Level 2 status will be required to have a SCI Level 3 and attend a Level 2 Clinic. The purpose of the Level 2 Clinic is to better prepare our SCI to train our cycling athletes and Physical Education Teachers in the next level of the sport. Those who attend the clinics can expect to take home a wealth of knowledge in achieving a higher level of bike handling skills, a better understanding of the physiological stresses and adaptations the body endures through training, and how to utilize these stresses and adaptation in writing a better more succinct school lesson plan. All which can be used to help teachers conduct bicycling and achieve a higher level of success and accomplishment on the bike. Or the SCI Level 2 to be hired on as the "School Cycling Coach".

SCI Level 1 Advancement

In order to advance to the SCI’s highest level, you must be a Level 2 SCI in good standing and also have cycling competition experience. The SCI must attends a Level 1 Clinic, and the SCI must pass the Level 1 Competency Quiz. This highest SCI Level mission is to establish bicycling as a competitive sport at the school(s) and to inspire interscholastic competition in whatever discipline is best suited for the school and the community. The SCI Level 1 is required to post all the School Cycling Teams on the Web page. We want to brag about your coaching achievements!

SCI Level 1 Advancement

In order to advance to the SCI’s highest level, you must be a Level 2 SCI in good standing and also have cycling competition experience.
